THE KUNA INDIANS

The Kuna they live in islands of the archipelago de San Blas, in the Atlantic part of the Panamá Republic. The Comarca Kuna Yala in the language Kuna is called “Dulenega” it means "Patria de los Dule;” Dule is people and Nega is house.
The San Blas islands almost expands 400 km until the frontier with Colombia, more than 300 small islands they are along the coast in lagoons formed by barriers of reefs. Coconut palms, crystal clear water, banana plantations and the Kuna culture makes from the San Blas a tropical paradise.

The language Kuna is an indigenous language of the family Chibcha. The name of the language in Kuna is Dulegaya, what means "language of the town (Kuna)."
Dulegaya is the daily use language in the Comarcas (territory) and other areas Kunas, most of the children speak the language like native language. It is also used the Castilian (castellano spanish) language. For us it was easy to communicate with the kunas beacuse it is the same language of my country.

The fish, coconuts, lobsters, giant crabs and the Molas they are the economic base of the kunas .The Colombian merchants boats (for the coconuts), the restaurants of the Panama City (for the fish, lobsters and crabs) the tourists (for the Molas).

"To be in San Blas is like living in a paradise where the nature is owner of everything".



“Nega”(house) the kuna live in a Hut of bamboo with roof of palms; they are built by the whole community. they sleep in hammocks and the kitchen is located outside in another hut. in the picture kevin a kuna boy. Cayo Holandes Diadup island.




Mariela a Kuna friend With the traditional blouse, in front and behind, they are integrated the extraordinary "Molas" with their beautiful colors. The Molas they are made by hand for the kuna woman, a skirt to half leg is called "saburete", a handkerchief "muswe" of red color to protect their hair of the sun, their arms and legs are adorned with "shakiras" long chains of small spheres of colors, they are decorations geometric, and finally a ring of gold in the nose.
The kuna women usually use necklaces and earrings of gold. Mariela She lives in Diadup island Cayo Holandes.

When we arrived and the children saw that we are giving them cookies the children make quickly a row, to receive their cookie.

Kuna kitchen . The fish, corn, coconut, fruits like pineapple, mango, papaya etc.., lobster, crab, Guineo (banana) and imported rice is the basic food for the Kuna.





Big crab in kuna is "Suga." Almost every day the kuna they come to the boat to sell fish, crab, lobster, octopus when they have, coconuts and Molas.










Smoky fish is keept in the event of days of bad time.
